Luís Vila earned a degree in chemistry at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, in 1977. At the same time, he worked as a technician in the Synthesis and Pharmacology Departments of Dr. Andreu SA, a top Spanish pharmaceutical industry. After graduation, he worked as a Researcher at the Pharmacology Department at the same company. In 1982, he moved to Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau to initiate research in the field of prostanoids in relation to thrombosis. In 1986, he initiated a collaboration with the Dermatology Department of the same hospital and received his doctorate in chemistry from Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in 1990 working on the metabolism of arachidonic acid in skin in relation to psoriasis. Since 1991, Vila has been the Head of Angiology, Vascular Biology and Inflammation Laboratory at the Institut de Recerca of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. Currently, his main research interests are related to the role of inflammatory mediators on cardiovascular pathophysiology and cancer. Specifically, his team is developing in vitro models of tumor growth and basic research on the antitumoral action of neutrophils.
