Alejandro P. Comellas received his medical degree in 1996 from the Central University of Venezuela, in Caracas, Venezuela. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at the Northewestern University, Chicago, Ill, USA. In 2005, Comellas joined the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Northwestern University. In 2008, he moved to the University of Iowa and joined the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine. His research interest lies in the area of acute lung injury, with a focus on the mechanisms that affect the alveolar epithelial barrier. His laboratory has been studying the effects of hypoxia and ambient air pollution on the alveolar epithelial barrier.
