Ivan H. El-Sayed
Ivan H. El-Sayed attended college at Brown University and was graduated with a B.S. degree in neuroscience. He then attended Boston University School of Medicine. In addition, he performed a one-year internship in general surgery and then 4-year residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery at Boston Medical Center. After a fellowship in head and neck oncologic surgery, he stayed on the faculty at UCSF in the Department of Otolaryngology. As a Physician Scientist, Dr. El-Sayed both treats patients with cancer of the head and neck and also investigates applications of nanotechnology for the diagnosis and management of cancer. His research has been highly cited and his article in 2006 was recognized by Science Watch as the highest cited article in the entire field of chemistry in 2007. He has formed a Head and Neck Cancer Nanomedicine Center in the Department of Otolaryngology. His research interests include nanodiagnostics, photothermal therapy, drug delivery, and nanotoxicity.
