P. J. Costa Branco received a B.S. degree and an M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1988 and 1991, respectively, and B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL), Lisbon, Portugal, in 1991, 1992, and 1998, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Scientific Area of Energy, Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal. His research areas are in electrical machines and control of electrical drives, and he is currently engaged in research on advanced actuators/sensors based on smart materials as piezoelectric materials, ionic polymers, and superconductors.
