Phillip R. Pittman

Phillip R. Pittman is currently a Senior Medical Scientist and Director of the Military Vaccine Clinical Research Center, the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, Fort Detrick, Md, USA. He received the M.D. and M.P.H. degrees from Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Mass, USA. His internship and residency were performed at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, NYC, N.Y., USA. After serving as Chief of the Medicine Department, US Army Hospital, West Berlin, Germany, he completed a fellowship at the NIH, Bethesda, Md, USA. He was then assigned to the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Fort Detrick, Md, USA, where Pittman has served in several positions, including Chief of Special Immunizations and Chief of the Division of Medicine. He retired from active duty as a colonel in July 2010 but continues his research interests as a civilian. His research interests include development of vaccines and other countermeasures against biologics and select infectious diseases. He has experience in basic and applied research and has conducted many Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 4 clinical trials. Pittman has published extensively in the areas of vaccine safety and immunogenicity and biodefense.
