Shota Atsumi serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of California, Davis, Calif, USA. He received his Ph.D. degree from Kyoto University in 2002 and served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Arizona from 2002 to 2006 and at the University of California, Los Angeles, from 2006 to 2009. His research focuses on the use of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering approaches to engineer microorganisms. Currently, his group is genetically modifying photosynthetic bacteria to build CO2 into C4-C5 alcohols, which have great potential as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels. This new strategy possesses several advantages for the long-term, global-scale goal of achieving a cleaner and more sustainable energy economy.
