Kate Scholberg

Kate Scholberg was born in London, UK, and grew up near Montreal, Canada. She did her undergraduate work at McGill University in Montreal, and received her Ph.D. degree from Caltech in Pasadena. While at Caltech, she worked on MACRO, the Monopole Astrophysics and Cosmic Ray Observatory, an underground detector designed to search for magnetic monopoles at the Gran Sasso Laboratory located near l'Aquila, Italy. She moved to Boston University as a research associate in 1996 to work on the the Super-Kamiokande experiment, a large underground water Cherenkov detector in Japan, which in 1998 showed evidence that neutrinos from atmosphere oscillate in flavor, and hence must have mass. The K2K (KEK to Kamioka) long baseline experiment provided the first confirmation of this result with beam neutrinos. Scholberg also led the effort to create SNEWS (SuperNova Early Warning System), an international neutrino experiment network designed to provide an early alert to astronomers of a Galactic core collapse supernova. From 2000 to 2004, Scholberg was an Assistant Professor at MIT, where she worked on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer cosmic ray experiment. In 2004 she moved to Duke University, where she continues working on Super-Kamiokande and on T2K (Tokai to Kamioka), the next-generation high-intensity neutrino beam experiment which will further explore neutrino mixing questions.
