Alexander Bauer studied at the Medical School of the University of Marburg, Marburg, Germany during 1988–1989, and at the Medical School of the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg during 1989–1995. From 1993 to 1997, he worked on the M.D. thesis that dealt with differential effects of d-Sotalol on normal and infarcted myocardium. In 1994–1995, he was an intern at the Department of Internal Medicine, Surgery Anaesthesiology, University of Heidelberg. From 1995 to 2001, he has completed a residency/fellowship at the Department of Cardiology, University of Heidelberg under Professor Wolfgang Kuebler. Bauer was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Cardiology, Johns Hpkins University, Baltimore, Md, USA, under Professor Eduardo Marban and Program Director Professor J. Kevin Donahue, from 2001 to 2003. In 2003, he had a Fellowship at the Department of Cardiology, University of Heidelberg under Professor Hugo Katus. Bauer received his Habilitation degree in 2006.
