Toshiyuki Fukao was born in Seki city, Gifu prefecture, Japan, in 1961. He is a pediatrician. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the Gifu University, Japan, in 1989. Since 2007, he is a Professor at the Department of Pediatrics, Graduate School of Medicine, Gifu University, and at the Medical Information Sciences Division, United Graduate School of Drug Discovery and Medical Information Sciences, Gifu University. His academic membership includes The American Society of Human Genetics, The Society for the Study of Inborn Error of Metabolism, The Japan Pediatric Society, The Japanese Society of Human Genetics, The Japanese Society of Inherited Metabolic Disease, The Japanese Society of Allergology, The Japanese Society of Pediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology, The Japanese Society of Child Neurology, The Japanese Society of Immunology, The Japan Society of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine, The Japan Medical Association, and The Japan Pediatric Assocaition. He got a promotion award (Japanese Society of Inherited Metabolic Disease) in 1993 in the title of “Molecular analysis of mitochondrial acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase deficiency” and a promotion award (Japanese Society of Human Genetics) in 1998 in the title of “Study on diagnosis and molecular analysis for inborn errors of ketone body metabolism.” His study fields are inborn errors of metabolism, especially defects in ketone body metabolism and mitochondrial beta-oxidation, primary immunodeficiency syndromes, especially selective IgG2 deficiency and ataxia telangiectasia, and allergy such as atopic dermatitis and bronchial asthma.
