Frank D. Sonnichsen received his degree in organic chemistry in Germany and joined the Sykes group at the University of Alberta to develop and apply NMR spectroscopy to the study of protein structure and function. Subsequently, he joined Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Center for Structural Biology. Research foci were the study of structure and function of antifreeze proteins, the epidermal growth factor receptor, prions, and a number of other protein systems. In 2008, Dr. Sonnichsen moved back to Germany, adding the devlopment of photoactive compounds and NMR contrast agents to his research interests.
