Fabio Marra

University of Florence, Italy

Fabio Marra graduated cum laude from the School of Medicine, University of Florence in 1986. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1992. Since after graduation, Dr. Marra has become involved in studies on the pathophysiology of chronic liver disease. From 1992 to 1994, he has been a postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, USA, where he became familiar with the application of molecular and cellular biology techniques to biomedical research. In 1995, he was appointed as the Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine, the University of Florence, where he leads an independent research group. Since 2004, he has been an Associate Professor of medicine. In addition to his research activity, Dr. Marra is involved in clinical work and teaching in the Department of Medicine. From 2002 to 2005, he has been a Member of the Steering Committee of the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF). Since 2007, he has been a Member of the Governing Board of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). He published more than 100 papers on peer-reviewed journals, and is a Member of the Editorial Board of major international journals, including Gastroenterology and Gut. Dr. Marra regularly serves as a reviewer for the most important gastroenterology journals and for funding agencies. His group provided a relevant contribution to the study of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying liver inflammation and repair, with work widely cited in the literature. In particular, he has a great contribution in defining the role of different factors, including cytokines and chemokines, in response to chronic liver damage, which increases the knowledge in the field of liver fibrosis. In this area, Dr. Marra is recognized as a national and international expert, as indicated by numerous participations in meetings and seminars for being an invited speaker.
