Axel Steiger was born in Germany in 1953. In 1979, he acquired an MD degree with a thesis in physiology entitled “Mechanisms of sleep induction by gamma-hydroxybutyric acid” from the University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany, and received the license to practice medicine. From 1979 to 1980, he worked as a Junior Research Scientist in the Department of Physiology, University of Munich. From 1980 to 1981, he served as a Staff Physician in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Essen, and, between 1981 and 1987, at the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology, University of Mainz. In 1985, he had board certification in psychiatry. He served as a Senior Psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Freiburg, from 1987 to 1991. In addition, he won the Research Award from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Biologische Psychiatrie in 1988. In 1989, he was granted a Postdoctoral degree, with a thesis entitled “Sleep EEG and nocturnal hormone secretion in patients with depression and normal controls” by the University of Freiburg. From 1989 to 1998, he worked as a Lecturer in psychiatry at the Universities of Freiburg and Munich. Moreover, he served as a Professor at the University of Munich in 1998, and he had board certification in sleep medicine in 2004. As of 1991, he works as a Senior Psychiatrist and as the Head of the research group Endocrinology of Sleep at the Department of Psychiatry, Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, Munich, Germany. Furthermore, he has about 210 publications. He is a Member of several scientific societies and participates in board activities such as being an Assistant Secretary of the European Sleep Research Society (19921996), a Treasurer, Arbeitsgemeinschaft Neuropsychopharmakologie und Pharmakopsychiatrie (AGNP, 19982001), a Chairman of the Scientific Committee, 21st Symposium of AGNP (1999), a Secretary of AGNP (since 2002), and a Member of the Advisory Board of the Section Neuroendocrinology of the DGE (since 2003). Furthermore, he serves as a Reviewer for various journals and grant agencies.
