Alan K. T. Lau

Alan K. T. Lau joined in 1987 the Aircraft Maintenance Division at Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. (HAECO) as a Craft Apprentice for three years and half. He received his B.E. and M.E. degrees in aerospace engineering from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, RMIT University, Australia, in 1996 and 1997, respectively. He also obtained his Ph.D. degree in philosophy from Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2001. He was appointed as an Assistant Professor, and was then promoted to an Associate Professor in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Orleans, USA, Lanzhou University, and Ocean University of China, China. He has received awards which include The Best Paper Awards on Materials in 1998, The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowship Award in 2000, the Young Scientist Award in 2002, the Young Engineer of the Year Award in 2004, the Faculty Outstanding Award for Research and Scholarly Activities in 2005, the Award for Outstanding Research in Nanocomposites for Space Applications, USA, in 2006, and finally the Chemical Physics Letters Most Cited Paper 2003–2007 Award. As he reached the age of 33, he was elected as a Member of the European Academy of Sciences with the citation “For profound contributions to materials science and fundamental developments in the field of composite materials” in 2002. He published more than 170 scientific and engineering articles, and his publications have been cited more than 650 times to date. In 2007, he was elected as the Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia (FIEAust) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE); Chair of The Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), UK, Hong Kong Chapter; Vice Chairman of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Hong Kong Chapter; Vice Chair of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Hong Kong Section. He is the Chairman of the 1st International Conference on Multifunctional Materials and Structures.
