Professor Lahiri holds an endowed chair i Economics at the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (since 2002). Before that he spent 25 years at the University of Essex, U.K. He obtained his PhD from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta 1n 1976, and then worked at the Indian Planning Commission for a year before moving to the United Kingdom in 1977. He has written over 100 papers in refereed journals, many of which are in top journals such as Econometrica, Economic Journal, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, International Economic Review, Canadian Journal of Economics, Oxford Economic Papers, and Journal of Public Economics. he has also written a number of books. His main research interests are in international economics and development economics. He has acted as an consultant for the FAO, IFAD, the World Bank and the African Research Council.
