Toshikazu Shirai received an M.D. degree in medicine from the Hokkaido University, School of Medicine, Sapporo, Japan in 1963 and a Ph.D. degree in pathology from Graduate School of Medical Science, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan in 1968. From 1968 to 1972, he served as a Research Associate at the Department of Pathology, Cancer Institute, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, Sapporo, Japan. From 1969 to 1972, he served as a Visiting Scientist at the Laboratory for Immunopathology, the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University Medical College, New York, NY, USA. From 1972 to 1978, he served as an Associate Director at Laboratory of Pathology, Sapporo City General Hospital, Sapporo, Japan. From 1978 to 1981, he worked as an Associate Professor at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. From 1981 to 2002, he held the position of a Professor at the Department of Pathology, Juntendo University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan. Since April 2002, he serves as a Professor Emeritus at the Juntendo University, Tokyo, Japan. He served in major professional societies including The Japan College of Rheumatology, The Japanese Society for Immunology, The Japanese Cancer Association, and The Japanese Society of Pathology. He has scientific and research experiences in immunology and immunopathology of autoimmune disease: genetic, cellular, and viral aspects of autoimmunity, immunology of cancer, and immunopathology of renal disease.
