Massoumeh Ebtekar was born in 1960 in Iran. Ebtekar completed part of her elementary school in the USA and then moved back to Iran to complete her studies and college. In 1985, she completed her B.S. degree in laboratory sciences at Shahid Beheshti University, Iran. In 1989, she obtained her M.S. degree in immunology and then in 1996 her Ph.D. degree in immunology from Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran. She began her academic career at Tarbiat Modares University in 1990, where she now serves as an Associate Professor at the Department of Immunology. Dr. Ebtekar provides postgraduate courses on cytokines including cytokine signalling and immunogenetics, immunology of the nervous system, and viral immunology including HIV immunopathology and HIV vaccines, psychoneuroimmunology, and aging. Dr. Ebtekar has supervised 8 M.S. theses and 9 Ph.D. students and currently has 6 postgraduate students. In addition to over 35 ISI articles, she has recently published a book chapter in Stem Cells and Cancer Stem Cells, Springer 2012. The chapter is entitled Characteristics of Cord Blood Cells : CGRP and SP Effects. His Ph.D. student, Somayeh Shahrokhi, won the prestigious national Razi Award in 2011, for her thesis work on cord blood cells.
