Niels Peek studied computer science and artificial intelligence, and holds a Ph.D. degree in computer science from Utrecht University, Utrecht, The Netherlands. He is currently Principal Investigator in Medical Informatics at the Academic Medical Center, the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His research focuses on improving quality and safety of healthcare using methods and tools from the fields of informatics, statistics, and artificial intelligence. He chairs the working group on Intelligent Data Analysis and Data Mining from the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA). Since 2003, he has supervised the CARDSS project on electronic decision support and quality improvement in cardiac rehabilitation. In 2013, he will become the Chair of the international conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIME 2013).
