Paul J. Gates
Paul J. Gates, B.S., M.S., Ph.D., serves currently as a Lecturer at School of Chemistry, University of Bristol. His specialty and area of research is the analysis of natural products and complex organic molecules by tandem and sequential mass spectrometry, especially using electrospray ionisation (ESI) and collision-induced dissociation (CID). He also generally interested in all areas of modern mass spectrometry, especially those applied to ion fragmentation studies and gas-phase chemistry. During his Ph.D. studies, he developed methodologies for identifying biosynthetic structural alterations within macrolide antibiotics. He has extended this work and has developed similar methodologies for the analysis several new compound classes, including polyethers and other macrolides. He is now working at extending this research to cover a wider range of compound types. A new area of interest for him has been born out of the general structural elucidation studies, which is the study of gas-phase chemistry.
