Horst Hummelsheim studied medicine at the Universities of Duesseldorf and Aachen. Hummelsheim worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Neurophysiology, University of Fribourg (Switzerland), in the Department of Neurology, University of Duesseldorf, and in the Department of Neurological Rehabilitation, University of Cologne. Hummelsheim served also as a Consultant in the Department of Neurological Rehabilitation, Free University of Berlin. In 1996, Hummelsheim received the Habilitation degree. Since 1999, Hummelsheim was the Head of the Department of Neurological Rehabilitation, University of Leipzig. In 1995, Hummelsheim got the Scientific Award of the Kuratorium ZNS for a series of studies on the neurophysiological basis of physiotherapy in stroke patients. Since 2008, Hummelsheim is the President of the German Society for Neurotraumatology and Clinical Neurorehabilitation (DGNKN).
