A. Piga is an Aggregated Professor of pediatrics at the University of Turin, Turin, Italy. He graduated in medicine in 1975 then specialized in pediatrics and hematology. Professor Piga is the President of the medical libraries of the University of Turin and is Scientific Advisor of the Thalassemia International Federation. He is the Chief in charge of the Division of Pediatrics and Thalassemia Centre of the S. Luigi University Hospital of Orbassano, where he designed and leads the Transfusional and Chelation programs and the Prevention and Prenatal Diagnosis program. He acts as Scientific Coordinator of the Webthal project, a thalassemia network based on a computerized clinical record. Piga worked as principal investigator, investigator, or advisory board member of many studies, including Phase I, II, and III clinical trials. He is the author or coauthor of more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and acts as reviewer for several international journals of hematology and pediatrics. His research interests are thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies, disorders of iron metabolism, development of new iron chelator drugs, noninvasive methods for body iron assessment, medical librarianship and evidence-based Medicine.
