Bárbara Meléndez was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1970. She received the degree in Sciences (biology) in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree in 1999, both from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Spain. She received the Ph.D. Extraordinary Award for her doctoral thesis from the UAM. From 1999 to 2000, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the European Union (Biomed 2 programme) at the Istituto Nazionale per lo Studio e la Cura dei Tumori in Milán, Italy. From 2000 to 2003, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) in Madrid, Spain. Presently, and since 2003, she works as a Researcher of the Spanish Miguel Servet programme at the Virgen de la Salud Hospital in Toledo, Spain. Meléndez was involved in the study of cancer since her doctoral thesis up to date. During her thesis, she was involved in the study of T-cell lymphomas in a murine model, but later on, she participated in the study of human T-cell lympomas, and since 2003, in the study of central nervous system tumors. She formed the Group of Study of Central Nervous System Tumors in Toledo, Spain, and developed several lines of research in this field, which is her major interest.
