Stefaan Caenepeel was born in Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium on May 21, 1956. He received the Licence degree in physics (1978) and mathematics (1980) from the University of Antwerp, Belgium and the Ph.D. degree (1984) and Habilitation degree (1991) from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. He has been affiliated with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel since 1978 and a Full Professor since 1997. His research interest includes abstract algebra, with emphasis on Brauer groups, Hopf algebras, and categorical methods in algebra. He has been the Treasurer (from 1991 till 2005) and President (from 2008 till 2011) of the Belgian Mathematical Society and Member of the Expert Panels for Mathematics of the two national science foundations in Belgium: FNRS (1998–2008) and FWO (since 2006). Dr. Caenepeel is a Member of the National Committee for Mathematics. He is an Editor of the International Electronic Journal of Algebra, the Annals of the University of Bucharest-Mathematics, and the International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences.
