Surapong Pinitglang studied in the UK with a University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce scholarship, where he obtained a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry under the supervision of Professor Keith Brocklehurst from Queen Mary, University of London, London, UK. He spent a long research and teaching career at the School of Science and Technology, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Bangkok, Thailand, where he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in biochemistry. He was the Chairman of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Section, Science Society of Thailand under the Patronage of His Majesty the King. He is the Head of the Enzyme Technology and Computational Biology Group within the School of Science and Technology, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. He is an Editor for two international journals, a Reviewer for many journals, several national conference steering groups, and funding agencies. In 1998, 2000, and 2002, he was awarded a visiting fellowship from the Royal Society, the UK Academy of Science, and he has been the recipient of various awards over his research career including the Research Excellence Award. He has also received funding through the Thailand Research Fund and the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency of Thailand. He served as a Vice President for planning and development, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, from 2002 to 2006, after which he returned to the research career. He is particularly interested in computational biology of three-dimensional structure and mechanism of cysteine proteinases. A new direction for the lab is involved with novel enzymology of structure-based drug design for tropical diseases.
