Ferenc Petak was born on August 11, 1967, Szeged, Hungary. He received his Ph.D. degree from Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Medical University, Szeged, Hungary, entitled "Partitioning of airway and tissue mechanics by low-frequency forced oscillations" (1998). Currently, he is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Physics and Informatics, University of Szeged, Szeged, Hungary. From 1995 to 1996, he was a Research Assistant at the Institute for Child Health Research, Perth, Australia (18 months); in 1997, he was a Research Fellow at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Boston University, Boston, USA (3 months); from 1999 to 2000, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. His major research interests include mechanical properties of the respiratory system, effects of anesthetic agents on the airways and on the lung parenchyma, airway hyperreactivity, and cardiopulmonary interactions. His awards and prizes include Poster prize, Annual Scientific Meeting of the Hungarian Respiratory Society (1994); ETT Young Researchers Award (from the Hungarian Ministry of Health and Welfare) (1998); Hungarian National Research Fund (OTKA) Travel Grant U31419 (1999); Hungarian National Research Fund (OTKA) Grant F 38340 (5 million HUF) (2002-2005); Bekesy Gyorgy Postdoctoral Fellowship (2003-2006); Bolyai Janos Research Fellowship (2006-2009); Hungarian National Research Fund (OTKA) Grant K62403 (6.4 million HUF) (2005-2008); and Hungarian National Research Fund (OTKA) Grant K81179 (12.1 million HUF) (2010-2014). Since 1998, he has been a Member of the Hungarian Respiratory Society and the European Respiratory Society.
