Giustino Varrassi is a Full Professor and the Chairman of the Department of Anestesia and Intensive Care and the Director of the Residency program in Anestesia and Intensive Care at the University of L’Aquila, Italy. He is the Founder and the President of the Federation of IASP Chapters (EFIC) and of the Paolo Procacci Foundation and the Founder of the European Society of Obstetric Anaesthesia (ESOA). He is a Member of the Società Italiana di Anestesia, Analgesia, Rianimazione e Terapia Intensiva (SIAARTI) since 1974, of the Board of Associazione Italiana per lo Studio del Dolore (AISD) since 1977, and of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) since 1984. Moreover, he is an invited speaker in more than 500 congresses (national and international), mainly on obstetric anaesthesia and on pain management. He is an author of about 500 papers, published in international and national scientific journals, and of 46 chapters of books on obstetric anaesthesia and pain management, and also he is an editor of 31 books and congress proceedings. To nowadays, he organized over 40 congresses (including the 1st ESOA Congress, Florence, 1994; 1st EFIC Congress, Verona, 1995; and the 10th Congress of the World Society of Pain Clinicians, Sardinia, 2002).
