Miguel Alcaraz is research professor of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC, http://www.csic.es) at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (Institute of Marine Sciences, http://www.icm.csic.es) of Barcelona, where is the head of the Marine Zooplankton Ecology Group (GEZMA). Has coordinated and participated in more than 20 research projects, the last of them the EU- funded FP7 EU project ATP (Arctic Tipping Points, www.eu-atp.org), and the Spanish research projects “OITHONA” (http://www.icm.csic.es/bio/projects/oithona/home.htm) and “PROTOS”, as well as on the circumnavigation Spanish expedition “MALASPINA” (http://www.expedicionmalaspina.es). His research interests lie primarily in marine plankton ecology, pelagic food webs, and physical-biological interactions in aquatic systems. Author of more than 130 research articles in SCI publications and books, is also member of the editorial board of international scientific journals such as Journal of Plankton Research, Arquipelago, Scientia Marina and ISRN Oceanography. Amongst his main hobbies, drawing and painting allowed him to illustrate his own contributions to the Natural History collection Història Natural del Països Catalans.
