Ben Young

Ben Young is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Hong Kong. He received his B.S., B.E., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sydney in 1991, 1993, and 1998, respectively. Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong in January 2005, he taught at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for 6 years. Dr. Young was one of the code writers of “Hong Kong Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel” for the Buildings Department, Hong Kong Government. He was also involved in the development of Singapore standard on the “cold-formed welded steel structural hollow sections” for the Productivity and Standards Board of Singapore Government. His research interests include cold-formed steel structures, testing and design of steel structures, stainless steel structures, aluminum structures, structural stability, and fire resistance of metal structures. Furthermore, he received the Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award in 2002, the Bechtel Foundation Engineering Teaching Excellence Award in 2003, and the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching Award in 2004 from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He also received the Best Teacher Award in 2006, and the Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2006 from the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Young is currently an Editorial Board Member of Journal of Constructional Steel Research, Journal of Advanced Steel Construction, The Open Civil Engineering Journal, The Open Construction and Building Technology Journal, and Progress in Steel Building Structures.
