Michael Friswell

Michael Friswell received his B.A. degree in mathematics from Oxford University in 1982, his Ph.D. degree in vibration engineering from Aston University in 1990, and his D.S. degree from the University of Wales in 2000. He has been the Sir George White Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Bristol University since 2002, and before that he was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wales, Swansea. He has been awarded an Advanced Research Fellowship from the Engineering and Physical Research Council in 1996–2001, Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2002–2007, and a European Marie-Curie Excellent Grant Award in 2005–2008. Friswell has a rather eclectic mix of research interests, primarily involving structural dynamics, though recently expanding to morphing aircraft. His long-term and continuing interests include the improvement of finite element models using measured data, the identification of damage location and extent using model-based algorithms, rotating machinery dynamics, model reduction methods, the modeling and analysis of structures with viscoelastic damping, the dynamics of nonlinear systems, acoustic emission, and active vibration control. His recent work on morphing aircraft includes various methods of introducing compliance into aircraft structures (aeroelastic tailoring, bistable structures, topology optimization), the design of novel control effectors, the flight control of morphing structures, and conceptual design aspects. The theme running throughout these topics is the modeling and analysis of dynamic structures and systems, and it links both experimental data and numerical predictions. The research covers a wide range of traditional engineering disciplines, from civil to aeronautical engineering, and a wide range of topics within these disciplines.
