Somchai Thongtem has received degrees in physics: a B.S. degree (Silver Medal) from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, and M.S. degree from Chiang Mai University, Thailand. He continued his studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA, and he has received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in metallurgical engineering. He serves as a Professor of materials science at Chiang Mai University, where he has been taught. His research activities are preparation and characterization of micro- and nanostructured materials, relating to luminescence and thermoelectric properties, solar cells, and gas sensors, including surface modification of metals.
