Yasumichi Arai graduated from Keio University School of Medicine, and was trained in geriatric medicine (MD, PhD) at the Keio University Hospital (Tokyo, Japan). He was a visiting scientist of the Institute of Ageing and Health, Newcastle University, UK from 2004 to 2006. He is an instructor, teaching geriatric medicine and health care for the elderly at Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Keio University School of Medicine. He has involved in the Tokyo Centenarians Study since 1995, and has expertise in biomedical analysis and geriatric assessment of centenarians. His main research area is metabolic adaptation at extremely old age. He is co-PI of the Tokyo oldest old survey of total health (TOOTH), which aims to investigate the associations between physical, mental, and oral health and lifestyle in the oldest old (85+) inhabitants in Tokyo. Yasumichi Arai was awarded the young investigator award from Japan Foundation for Aging and Health in 2003.
