Henryk Barthel, MD, PhD, is Full Professor and Assistant Medical Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the University Hospital Leipzig (Germany). He underwent training in Nuclear Medicine in Heidelberg and Leipzig. From 2000 to 2003 he worked as a Research Fellow at the Imperial College Hammersmith Hospital in London (UK). His current research activities focus on new PET imaging techniques to improve diagnosis and treatment in dementia and stroke, as well as on combined PET-MR imaging. Dr. Barthel is author of more than 90 original publications (published apart from the Nuclear Medicine journals in Lancet Neurology, Lancet Oncology, Cancer Research, Stroke, and others), reviews and book chapters. He serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, and as member of the Editorial Boards of ISRN Molecular Imaging and the American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. He also works as reviewer for Neuroimage, Journal of Nuclear Medicine, American Journal of Psychiatry, Neurobiology of Aging, Neural Regeneration Research, Lancet Oncology, International Journal of Cancer, and others. He received a number of public and industrial grants. Dr. Barthel is member of the SNMMI Brain Imaging Council Board of Directors and the Working Group Neuro-Nuclear Medicine of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine. In 2004, he received the Georg von Hevesy Award of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine, also in 2004 the Berson Yalow Award of the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and in 2012 the Cuno Winkler Award of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine.
