Allen W. Mangel

Allen W. Mangel, M.D., Ph.D., works as the Executive Vice President of RTI-Health Solutions, a research unit of RTI International. He serves as a Gastroenterologist, as well. His specific clinical research interests focuses upon identifying new agents to be used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. He has led the clinical development of several irritable bowel syndrome drugs. Additionally, he described the electrophysiologic basis for gastrointestinal cholecystokinin secretion and identified voltage-dependent contractile activity in gastrointestinal smooth muscle during incubation in calcium-free solution. He attended Georgetown Medical School, did his internship, residency, and gastroenterology Fellowship at Duke University, where he remained as a Faculty Member prior to joining Glaxo and RTI.
