Massimo Chiarugi was born in Pontedera, Italy, in 1955. From the University of Pisa, he received the M.D. degree in 1981 and the Board in General Surgery in 1986. In 1992, he obtained the position of an Associate Professor of surgery at the Department of Surgery of the University of Pisa. In 1991, Chiarugi was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Surgery of The State University of New Jersey, Camden and in 1999 at the Department of Surgery of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He was the Head of the Trauma and Emergency Surgery Unit of the Santa Chiara Hospital, Pisa from 1999 to 2000 and the Head of General Surgery Unit of the F. Lotti Hospital, Pontedera from 2001 to 2003. Presently, Chiarugi is a Professor at the Department of Surgery of the University of Pisa and the Head of the Biliary Surgery Unit of the Santa Chiara Hospital, Pisa. Mainly, he is interested in abdominal surgery, laparoscopy, and emergency surgery. His main affiliations include the American College of Surgeons and the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery fellowships.
