Dimitrios Karakitsos was born in Larissa, Greece, in 1972. He is currently an Attending Physician in critical care medicine at the General State Hospital of Athens, Greece, since 2008, and a Research Associate of the Vascular Laboratory, Department of Surgery, Stony Brook University Hospital, NY, USA. He has completed his residency in internal medicine and thereafter in critical care and further worked in many university hospitals in Greece, in the UK, and in France (1996-2008). Furthermore, he has completed his Ph.D. degree studies in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Crete (Greece), and he underwent postgraduate research training in The Netherlands and in the USA (2003-2008). Since 2010, he has been a Research Associate of the Vascular Laboratory, Department of Surgery, Stony Brook University Hospital, NY, USA, after completing a postgraduate fellowship. He is a member of the editorial board in several medical journals and the author of numerous medical articles and textbook chapters during the last 10 years. Finally, he is an active member in several international academic committees for promoting the use of ultrasound in critical care medicine (e.g., ILCEUS project of the winfocus.org). He participated actively in designing many registered case-control clinical trials, and he is still being actively involved in various ongoing research projects worldwide.
