K. Takayama is a Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutics at Hoshi University, Tokyo, Japan. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Pharmaceutics, Hoshi University, in 1974, 1976 and 1979, respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, for 1984 –1986. In 1993, he was appointed as an Associate Professor, and then became full Professor at Hoshi University in 1999. His research activities mainly involve computer-aided design and optimization of pharmaceutical product formulations, including studies on oral controlled-release, transdermal and transmucosal drug delivery systems. In these areas, he has published over 290 scientific papers and 30 book chapters. He has received the Asahi Kasei Research Promoting Award from the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Japan (APSTJ) in 1995, the Best Research Paper Awards from the Japanese Society for Alternative to Animal Experiments (JSAAE) in 2002, and APSTJ in 2005. Dr. Takayama has served as an Associate Editor on the Journal of Controlled Release (1999 –2003) and now he is on the EditorialBoard of Journal of Controlled Release and the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
