Alan Altraja is currently a Professor of pulmonary medicine at the University of Tartu, Tartu, Estonia. He graduated at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Tartu in 1990 and received the scientific degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland, in 1999. Altraja’s main research interests include the inflammatory basis of asthma, airway remodeling, pathogenetic mechanisms of COPD with special regard to pharmacologic modulation of oxidative stress and inflammation, epidemiology of tuberculosis, and antimicrobial resistance in lower respiratory tract infections. Professor Altraja is currently the Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Respiratory Society and Member of the European Respiratory Society and many of its assemblies. He has contributed to the HERMES (Harmonised Education in Respiratory Medicine for European Specialists) programme from 2005 up till now. Since 2007, Altraja has served as an associate editor of international respiratory journals and has also contributed as a referee.
