Pavel Michalek works as an Associate Professor of anesthesia and intensive medicine at 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague and General University Hospital of Patras, Prague, Czech Republic. He obtained the Medical degree in 1992, the Ph.D. degree in 2002, and the D.E.S.A. diploma in 2008. He acquired the board certification in Anesthesia in 1995 and 2000 and in Pain Medicine in 1999. He worked as a Lead Consultant for cardiovascular anesthesia at Na Homolce Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic, from 2001 to 2005; a Consultant Anesthetist at Antrim Area Hospital, Ballymena, UK, from 2005 to 2010; an Associate Professor at the General University Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic, from 2010 till now. He has been teaching since 1999; he taught at 1st and 3rd Medical Faculty, Charles University in Prague, Prague, Czech Republic, and at Antrim Area Hospital, Ballymena, UK. He has received a number of awards including Marquis Who's Who in Medicine, Dictionary of International Biography, and Cambridge, and in 2009, he received the clinical excellence award of Northern HSC Trust. He has several monographs including “Sedation in dental office”, “Techniques of regional anesthesia and analgesia”, and “Interventional pain treatment”, and he has also written chapters in monographs including “The role of supraglottic airway devices in difficult intubation scenarios” and “Intubation: preparation, procedures and complications.” He is an Associate Editor at the Journal of Medical Case Reports and Case Reports in Anesthesiology, and he is a Reviewer at BMJ Learning, Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, Dove Medical Press, Journal of Paramedic Practice, and AIM. He is a Member of a number of professional societies including Difficult Airway Society, European Airway Management Society, Society for Ultrasound in Anaesthesia, European Society of Regional Anaesthesia, Czech Society of Anaesthesia, and Resuscitation and Intensive Medicine, and he has been a board member in the Czech Pain Society from 2005 to 2009. His research interests include regional anesthesia, ultrasound in perioperative practice, airway management, vascular and thoracic anesthesia, and interventional pain management.
