R. J G Halfens studied industrial and organisational psychology at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands, obtaining his M.S. degree in 1980 and his Ph.D. degree (locus of control in relation to health behavior) in 1985 at the Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands. He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Health Care and Nursing Science, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands. His main research interests include epidemiology of prevalence and incidence, prevention and treatment of main care problems (especially pressure ulcers) in health care in general and chronic care in particular, developing as well as researching EB interventions for these care problems, and implementation of knowledge and guidelines in practice. Professor Halfens is the Scientific Director of the International Prevalence Measurement Health Care Problems (LPZ), which measures the prevalence, prevention, and treatment of several health care problems in health care institutions in the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, and New Zealand. Dr. Halfens is and was a member of several national and international committees and societies. Furthermore, he is the Codirector of the International Maastricht-Berlin-Graz Ph.D. Program. He acts as reviewer of scientific articles for several international journals and is coauthor of a large number of national and international publications.
