Eero Castren

Eero Castren cofounded Hermo Pharma Ltd. in 2008. Currently, he serves in the Scientific Advisory Board of the company. Dr. Castren received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kuopio and was trained in neuropharmacology and molecular neuroscience at the National Institute of Mental Health (Bethesda, Md, USA) and Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry (Martinsried, Germany). His work has concentrated on neurotrophic factors, particularly the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Dr. Castren's pioneering work has revealed how TrkB, the receptor for BDNF, is involved in the modulation of neuronal plasticity and the action of antidepressant drugs. Dr. Castren has published more than 130 scientific articles in journals including Science, Nature Reviews Neuroscience, and PNAS. Dr. Castren is currently the Sigrid Jusélius Professor at the Neuroscience Center, University of Helsinki.
