Jack Gillespie

Jack Gillespie has served the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials (UD-CCM) in several roles since 1981, achieving the position of Director in 1996. Dr. Gillespie has maintained a dedicated state-of-the-art facility and maintains an open-lab philosophy to encourage participation in research and educational activities. Currently, more than 200 researchers are conducting more than 120 projects in composites-related fields. Dr. Gillespie is the Principal Investigator for three prestigious DoD Centers of Excellence investigating multifunctional composite materials, mechanics and performance of composites, and intelligent processing of composites. In addition, Dr. Gillespie is the PI of the Center’s University-Industry Consortium, “Application of Composite Materials to Industrial Products,” with current membership exceeding 60 companies. Professor Gillespie is the Donald C. Phillips Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and he also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He has advised more than 70 graduate students as well as more than 100 undergraduate students. He has authored/coauthored more than 600 publications in composites science and technology including 11 books/book chapters, 15 patents, and more than 200 refereed journal papers, 300 proceeding papers, and 100 technical reports. Dr. Gillespie has served as a Member of the prestigious and influential National Research Council Board on Manufacturing and Engineering Design, and Chair of the National Materials Advisory Board Committee on High-Performance Structural Fibers for Advanced Polymer-Matrix Composites. Dr. Gillespie has been Editor of the Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials since 1993, and he serves on numerous editorial boards.
