Baruch Meerson

Baruch Meerson received the M.S. degree in physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1975, and the Ph.D. degree from the Institute of Physics of the Earth, the USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1978. From 1975 to 1987, he held research positions at the Institute of Applied Geophyics in Moscow. In 1988, he moved to Israel and, since then, has been working at the Physics Department of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Associate Professor in 1991-1995, Full Professor since 1995). He held visiting positions at the University of Maryland at College Park (1989), MIT (1990), Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (1998), Argonne National Laboratory (2001), Humboldt University (2001), Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics (2004-2005), and University of Minnesota (2007-2008). He was Chairman of Physics Studies at the Hebrew University in 1996-1999. He has worked on a broad variety of topics of physics far from equilibrium: nonlinear dynamics, granular dynamics, phase transition kinetics, and plasma physics. He has coauthored about 100 papers and supervised 18 research students and postdocs. He was one of the pioneers of quantum chaos by having developed, in 1979, a theory that explained the multiphoton excitation and ionization of Rydberg atoms by an oscillating electric field in terms of emergence of classical chaos in such atoms. He also made important contributions to the theory of radio emission of the Sun, to the theory of thermal condensation instability in gases and plasmas, to the theory of Ostwald ripening, to the theory of nonlinear oscillations and waves, and to fluid dynamics. His present research interests include granular hydrodynamics and stochastic processes in birth-death systems.
