Brown University, USA

Jan Hesthaven recieved an M.S. degree in computational physics in 1991, and a Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics in 1995, both from the Technical University of Denmark. Since 2005, he has been a Full Professor of applied mathematics at the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, Providence, RI, USA. He leads a research team focusing on the developement, analysis, and application of robust, flexible, and reliable computational methods for solving partial differential equations with a particular emphasis on high-order accurate methods for time-dependent problems. Applications include electromagnetics, plasma physics, fluid dynamics, and general multiscale/multiphysics problems. Since 2006, he has also been serving as the Director of the Brown University Center for Computation and Visualization, which supports and enables the novel use of advanced computing and visualization in teaching, learning, and research throughout the sciences, arts, and humanities. In 2000, he was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, in 2001 a Manning Assistant Professorship, and in 2002 an NSF Career Award. In 2004, he was also awarded the Philip J. Bray Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Sciences by Brown University. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing (2004), the Journal of Scientific Computing (2003), and several other major journals in scientific computing and numerical analysis, and as a Permament Member of the Scientific Committee for Leading International Conferences.
