Johannes Bitzer was promoted to Associate Professor Ad Personam for gynecology and obstetrics. John Bitzer was born in 1950 in Tailfingen, Germany. After his studies in medicine at the University of Freiburg and a Ph.D. thesis under the physiologist Professor Fleckenstein, he passed also the American government exams. From 1977 to 1979, he was an Assistant in the Surgical Department of St. Barbara Hospital in Dortmund and Rosman Hospital in Breisach. He received a professional training in epidemiology, social medicine and tropical medicine in Hamburg and Heidelberg, then he worked from 1979 to 1981 as a Senior Doctor in the district hospital in Banikoara (Benin, West Africa) as part of the German Development Aid. His recognition as a Specialist in gynecology and obstetrics was in Basel in March 1985. In addition, he was trained in psychotherapy/psychoanalysis in Freiburg with training analysis in Basel. As a Senior Consultant, he worked at the hospital Bad Säckingen (1985-87) and at the social medical service of the University Women's Hospital Basel. In 1993, he was qualified for gynecological and obstetrical psychosomatic medicine. From 1994, he serves as the Head of Department at the University Women's Hospital Basel. On 1 August 1997, Bitzer serves as a Professor in psychosomatic gynecology and obstetrics appointed. Since 1998, he has been President of the International Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology ISPOG. The continued teaching and publishing activities of Professor Bitzer, his expertise and educational work, his organization of congresses and symposia, and his membership in prestigious national and international professional bodies ensure a lively activity in research and teaching.
