Virginia S. Martino

Virginia Susana Martino was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1948. She received the Pharmacist degree and the Ph.D. in pharmacy from the University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1970 and 1984, respectively. Since 1970, she has been teaching and doing research at the Cá tedra de Farmacognosia, Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica, University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and at the Instituto de Química y Metabolismo del Fármaco (IQUIMEFA), an institute belonging to UBA and to the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET). At present, she is the Head Professor of pharmacognosy at UBA and Independent Researcher at CONICET. Her investigations are mainly related with the isolation and identification of bioactive compounds from Argentine medicinal plants and quality control of herbal medicines. She has published two books and five chapters in books in the pharmaceutical area. She has been the President of the Latin American Society of Phytochemistry (2002–2005) and is part of the Editorial Board of the Latin American Journal of Pharmacy.
