Fabrizio Tagliavini is a Neurologist and Neuropathologist and is currently the Head of the Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases and Director of the Division of Neurology 5 & Neuropathology at the Neurological Institute “Carlo Besta”, Milano, Italy. Since 1980, his research was focused on degenerative dementias, in particular Alzheimer’s and prion diseases, using a variety of approaches including classical neuropathology, immunohistochemistry, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology. His major achievements have been the identification of new pathogenic mutations linked to these conditions, the identification and characterization of the early neuropathological changes, the biochemical characterization of the misfolded proteins or protein fragments, the development and characterization of relevant cellular and animal models, and the identification of compounds with the ability to specifically interact with misfolded proteins. This work has been published in over 180 papers in peer-reviewed journals including Nature, Nature Medicine, Science, Cell, Neuron, EMBO Journal, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, and Lancet. He is a Member of the Executive Committee of the International Society of Neuropathology, Delegate of the European Confederation of Neuropathological Societies, and Past President of the Italian Association of Neuropathology.
