Rui Amaral Mendes
Rui Amaral Mendes graduated in 2000 from the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, and received his Ph.D. degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery and pathology from the VU Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he worked under the supervision of Professor Isaac van der Waal. Being an Appointed Fellow of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in May 2005, he was given full membership by the European Association of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery in September 2006, and later in December, he was accepted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Oral Oncology. In May 2009, he was invited to join the Research Interest Group of Head & Neck Oncology of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In November 2009, he was selected as a Consultant/Assistant Reviewer of the World Workshop of Oral Medicine. Being an Appointed Clinical Director of the University Dental Clinic of the Catholic University of Portugal, Lisbon, Portugal, in October 2011, he became the Head of the DMD Program in July 2012. He is also the Head of the postgraduation course in oral-maxillofacial pathology and a Professor of oral medicine and oral oncology. Mendes is currently the Head of the Bone Complication Section of the Oral Care Study Group of the International Society of Oral Oncology/Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (ISOO/MASCC), a Member of the Editorial Board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology and the Journal of Carcinogenesis and Mutagenesis, and an Associate Editor for Oral Medicine of the Editorial Board of the British Medical Journal-Case Report. Other than tumors of the jaws, his main research interests are potentially malignant lesions of the oral mucosa and genetics and epigenetics of head and neck cancer.
