Yoshihiko Sakurai received the B.B.A. degree from the Kobe University in 1978 and the M.D. degree from the Nara Medical University (Kashihara, Japan) in 1993 followed by residency training in pediatrics and hematology at the Nara Medical University Hospital. He prosecuted his studies on thrombosis and hemostasis at the Nara Medical University Graduate School of Medicine under the direction of Professor Yoshihiro Fujimura and received the Ph.D. degree in 1999. Following this, Sakurai conducted postdoctoral research at the Jerome H. Holland Laboratory (Rockville, Md, USA). Since 2000, he has been with the Department of Pediatrics at the Nara Medical University, where he is currently a Clinical Associate Professor. He also has been Chief of Pediatrics at the Nara Prefectural Mimuro Hospital since 2010. His research interests lie in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis, in particular the linkage between coagulation and inflammation as a type of nonspecific immune response.
