Mary E. Marquart is a native of Washington, Mo, USA and received her Ph.D. in biology from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Mo, USA in 1997. She studied bacterial pathogenesis under the mentorship of Dr. William D. Picking while at Saint Louis University, then became a postdoctoral fellow under Dr. James M. Hill at the Louisiana State University Eye Center, New Orleans, La, USA, where she was trained in ocular infectious diseases. She continued research in this area under the mentorship of Dr. Richard J. O’Callaghan at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Currently, Dr. Marquart is an Associate Professor of microbiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Miss, USA, where she investigates pneumococcal diseases of the eye. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, International Society of Eye Research, and the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society.
