Stan Veprek is a Professor Emeritus and the former Director of the Institute for Chemistry of Inorganic Materials, Technical University Munich (TUM). His areas of research interests include among others the materials and surface science, plasma chemical and physical vapour deposition, thin films and protective coatings, nanocrystalline silicon nc-Si, photoluminescence from nc-Si, and organosilicon compounds, heteroepitaxy of SiC, and superhard nanocomposite coatings. He teaches courses on surface and material science at the TUM and National University of Singapore. He published more than 375 scientific publications and several books, the last one Structural Nanocrystalline Materials (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2007) he coauthored with C. Koch, I. Ovidko, and S. Seal. Together with Professor Li Shizhi, he pioneered the field of superhad nanocomposites. More recently, he devoted his research to theoretical studies of these materials by means of ab initio density functional theory and nonlinear FEM, and their industrial applications.
