Dr. Farina is the leader of the Laboratory of Experimental Neuropathology (LEN) of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Florianópolis, Brazil. He received his M.D. degree in Toxicological Biochemistry from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Santa Maria, Brazil, and his Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. His main research interests include the mechanisms mediating the toxic effects of environmental pollutants toward the central nervous system, with a particular emphasis on the potential occurrence of neurodegenerative disease as consequence of pollutant-induced neurotoxicity. He has been particularly interested in metal- and pesticide-mediated neurotoxicity.
